GRANVILLE -- The Remsen-Union Rockets kept ahead of the Spalding Catholic girls for a 53-43 win Friday.
The Rockets led 14-9 coming out of the first quarter but Spalding threatened to come back, making it a two-point game at halftime. R-U still led 23-21.
"In the first half, Hailey Loutsch shot the ball well for us. She scored all of her 12 points in the first half," R-U girls coach Mike West said. "Spalding stayed with us in the half and then I'm guessing at half decided they were going to try to take Loutsch out of the game."
The Spartans didn't give Loutsch many chances to shoot in the second half, he said.
"That's when Brittany Sudtelgte went to work," West said. "Her 18 points all came in the second half. She added 12 rebounds for the night -- another big night for her."
At the end of the third quarter the Rockets had built a 14-point lead, going into the final stanza at 39-25, R-U.
The Rockets scored 14 more points before the end, and Spalding's 22-point final quarter wasn't enough to take away R-U's win.
Senior Brittany Weikel played a good game for R-U with eight points, nine assists and nine steals, West said.
R-U freshman Megan Maass came off the bench and logged eight rebounds for the night.
"It was a good night for her," West said. "it gets better and better for her every game."
With the win, the Rockets' record moves to 2-4 and 2-2 in the War Eagle Conference.
"They continue to improve," West said. "It's nice to see their hard work pay off with a win."
