SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- The Hinton grapplers fought hard and claimed fourth place out of seven varsity teams Saturday.
"Overall the fourth place finish was a big step for the Hinton Blackhawks," Hinton head wrestling coach Jan George said. "We had four finalists and nine of 12 wrestlers placed. Those that did not place wrestled well and came very close."
Four Hinton wrestlers claimed second place finishes for the day.
At 120, Blake Walton placed second and scored 22 team points; at 126, Skylar Richter placed second and scored 22 team points; at 132, Taylor Schroeder placed second and scored 22 team points; and at 113, Cole Mills placed second and scored 20 team points.
Mills' matchup with Zach Ulven, of Westwood, was a key matchup with post-tournament implications, George said.
Ulven was a place winner in the 2012 state tournament and is currently ranked second in the state.
"The match was very physical for both wrestlers with Ulven pulling out a 5-0 win over Mills," George said. " Cole will see Zach several more times this year before Sectionals."
Scoring third place for Hinton was Jacob Vondrak (138), and he scored 18 team points.
Colin Poss (160) also scored 18 team points and finished fourth for the day.
Werner Trieweiler (195) claimed a fourth place finish and scored 16 team points for Hinton.
At 220, Zac Schreck placed fifth and scored eight team points; and, at 106, Lucas Vondrak placed fifth and scored seven team points.
Jordan Gengler, at 195, wrestled as an unattached wrester and placed sixth.
Quinton Robinson (152), Alec Wodtke (182), and Keith VanEvera (285) did not place Saturday.
"Hinton`s fourth place finish is the first time in many years that they have been in the hunt for a team trophy of any kind," George said. "The kids wrestled hard."
