A-W second, Hinton third in WEC wrestling tourney

HINTON -- Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn earned the War Eagle Conference wrestling tourney title at Hinton Tuesday, while Akron-Westfield placed second and Hinton third.

MMC went 4-0, winning over A-W (42-33), Hinton (48-33), West Sioux (54-24) and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (57-23).

The Westerners went 3-1, losing only to MMC.

A-W won the dual with HMS 42-30, with West Sioux 48-27, and with Hinton 43-30.

"We wrestled well as a team. Everybody was after team points," the Westerners' head coach Dustin Meinen said. "Everybody was doing their job. There were matches where we had to keep from getting pinned, and we did that, and there were matches where we were favored and we needed to get pins, and the guys came through."

Two Westerner wrestlers earned their 100th win during the WEC tourney Tuesday.

A-W seniors Daniel Dirks, at 138, and Chet Willer, at 195, hit the century win mark for their high school wrestling careers.

A Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn wrestler, Heath Nagel, at 132, also earned his 100th win Tuesday.

Hinton went 2-2 for the night, winning against HMS 45-30 and West Sioux 51-18.

"Overall, I thought the wrestlers performed very well and were in every dual till the last match," Hinton wrestling coach Jan George said.
