REMSEN -- The Remsen-Union boys looked sharp against the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Hawks Friday with a 77-51 win.
R-U jumped out to a good start, nailing 26 points in the first quarter for an 11-point lead over HMS.
The Rockets doubled the Hawks' second quarter scoring to make their lead 46-25 at halftime.
HMS tried to close in on R-U in the third stanza, scoring 15 points to R-U's 12, but the Rockets came back with a 19-point fourth quarter to secure the victory.
"We had a lot of different contributors in the scoring column. We had three kids come off the bench and score in double figures for us," R-U coach Steve Neuberger said. "That's always nice to have when you can have kids come in and step up and contribute quality minutes like that off the bench."
Neuberger said going into the game, the R-U team had been aiming to set the tone defensively.
"I think we came out with a lot of intensity on the defensive end and forced HMS into some turnovers, and that kind of jump-started our offense to start the game," he said. "We had a couple lapses here and there, but our goal is always to go out and play 32 minutes of quality basketball, and I thought for the most part we did that Friday night."
R-U junior Austen Stock led scoring for the night with 19 points, going 3-for-9 on threes and 4-for-7 from the charity stripe.
Junior Nick Braun added 14 points, going 6-for-8 from the field. Senior Cam Kuchel added 13 points.
HMS' sophomore Blake Simons led scoring for the Hawks with 14 points.
For the Rockets, Braun led in rebounds with nine, while senior Danny Smith grabbed six.
Junior Tanner Hilbrands made six steals for R-U and senior Jeremy Sanchez chipped in for five assists.
R-U next plays Tuesday in a home matchup with Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn.
