High winds spread rural Le Mars farm fire

Monday, December 3, 2012

An older, wooden barn was destroyed by fire south of Le Mars Monday.

Firefighters from Le Mars, Merrill and Hinton responded to the barn fire at the Preston Schroeder farm, 33879 220th Street, Le Mars.

No one was at the farm when a passerby on Plymouth County Road K-49 reported the fire at 11:14 a.m. Monday.

The fire burned from west to east in 35 mile an hour wind, according to David Schipper, Le Mars Fire-Rescue Chief.

A total of 45,000 gallons of water was used to bring the barn fire under control and keep the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, including a house built in 2011, he said.

A burning area on the farm had been used earlier in the day and wind carried embers to the barn which caused the accidental fire according to the fire-rescue chief.

Le Mars firefighters were out on the call for approximately three hours.

Other details will be posted on this website and published Tuesday in the Le Mars Daily Sentinel.
