Gehlen boys stretch MMC battle into overtime

Monday, December 3, 2012

MARCUS -- A one-point edge for Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn in overtime ended Gehlen's comeback charge Friday.

The MMC Eagles slipped past with a 47-46 final score.

After trailing for the first three quarters, the Gehlen Jays came into the fourth stanza hot. They scored 12, holding the Eagles to only one point to tie it up at 40 all.

"We had a nice comeback -- they really gave it their all," Gehlen coach Mike Langel said.

The Jays took a temporary lead in the fourth quarter, and it went back and forth in overtime.

Gehlen had a chance to win it -- controlling the ball with seven seconds left.

"We took a shot and it just didn't fall, like it did all night," Langel said.

Early in the game, the Eagles owned the first quarter, going into the break leading by six, with the score 12-6, MMC.

"We just started out slow and didn't really shoot the ball well all night," Langel said.

The Jays were 17-of-65 from the field, for 26 percent, and they hit only four of their 15 free throws, he said.

But Gehlen came back with a 12-point second quarter to MMC's nine points to shorten the Eagles' halftime lead to three: 21-18.

"We've just got to get better at getting ready to play and coming out in the first quarter and playing a little better basketball so we don't have to work so hard at coming back in the game in the second half," Langel said.

MMC found the basket again in the third quarter, scoring 18 points to Gehlen's 10 before getting nearly shut out by the Jays in the fourth.

Gehlen senior Michael Whitehead and junior Aaron Jentz led the Jays' scoring with 11 points, sophomore Alex Kellen scored 10 and junior Blake Wiltgen scored nine for the Jays.

Colton Kneip, a junior at Gehlen, pulled down 10 boards and Whitehead logged nine rebounds plus four assists.

The Jays grabbed 16 steals from the Eagles including four each from Jentz and Kellen.

MMC's leading scorer was junior Dylan Spieler with 15 points, while senior Nate Rassel scored 9. The Eagles' senior Tyler Prunty grabbed 11 rebounds for the night.

Gehlen (1-2) matches up with Akron-Westfield at home Tuesday before going on the road Friday to play Spalding Catholic at Granville.
