Charles Henry Van Sickle, 87, of Sac City, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.

Charles was born Nov. 26, 1924, in Irene, S.D., the son of Clifford and Irene (Buckstead) Van Sickle. He graduated from Le Mars High School in 1942. Following graduation Charles served in the United States Army during World War II.

On May 27, 1946, Charles was married to Jean Vrana in Manilla, Iowa.

After the war, Charles started working at the Central Telephone Co. in Belmond, then moved to Sac City. He started as a repairman and retired as Central Office Equipment supervisor. He retired in 1977.

Charles was involved in community projects as a member of Hy-Noon Kiwanis; Lodge Master with the Masonic Lodge; and was an active member of his church.

He joined the Peace Corps from 1982-1985 and did mission work in Frakes, Ky., and Fiji Islands with his wife, Jean.

Charles enjoyed woodworking, making various items for family members. He cherished the time spent with his family.

Survivors include his son, Oral E. Van Sickle and wife, Connie, of Sac City; daughters, Patricia E. Wilson, of Adel, and Allyn A. Gerdes and husband, Gene, of Lake View; grandchildren: Tami (Chuck) Rondeau, Shawn Wilson, Sheila Van Sickle, Bryan Van Sickle, Stacie Gerdes and Kelli Gerdes; three step-grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; his sister, Leola Goetzinger, of Cedar Falls; and a brother, Oral (Betty) Van Sickle, of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; his parents, Clifford and Irene Van Sickle; his parents-in-law, John and Mary Vrana; a brother, Clifford Jr., and son-in-law, Mike Wilson.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at United Methodist Church in Sac City. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation was 5-7 p.m. Nov. 13, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
