Harlem-style basketball coming to Le Mars

Thursday, November 8, 2012

Local men and women will be facing off this month with the Harlem Ambassadors basketball team to raise money for playground equipment.

Twenty Le Mars community members, The Replacement Crew, will take on the Ambassadors at 4 p.m. Nov. 18 at Le Mars Community High School Carey Gym.

Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door.

All profits will be used to support "Project Playground," an effort by the Le Mars Elementary PTO to replace schools' playground equipment.

The event won't be like most basketball games, instead it will feature the Harlem Ambassadors unique Harlem-style.

That style includes high-flying slam dunks, dazzling ball-handling tricks and hilarious comedy routines, according to a press release.

The Harlem Ambassadors work with local not-for-profit and service organizations throughout the United States.

The Le Mars Rotary Club and Le Mars Elementary PTO are teaming up to bring the Harlem Ambassadors to Plymouth County.

Becky Klohs, past rotary club president, said the Harlem Ambassadors reached out to the club about the team's fundraising shows.

"I did some reading up on them and they had great reviews," Klohs said.

From there, 20 men and women were asked to play on the local team, The Replacement Crew, she said.

"We thought this event would be a good cause for the playground equipment," Klohs said.

Abby Phillips, a member of The Replacement Crew, said she volunteered as a way to give back.

"I try to stay active in the community and help them out anyway I can," she said. "I thought it would be fun event."

Along with Harlem-style basketball, the Nov. 18 event will include an autograph session with the Harlem Ambassadors and a raffle for an autographed basketball.

The Ambassadors perform more than 200 shows a year, which have helped raise millions of dollars, according to a press release.

Klohs said there has been a lot of interest in the upcoming Harlem Ambassadors versus The Replacement Crew basketball event.

"It should provide good entertainment for that day," Klohs said.

Tickets are $7 each. Children 4 and under are free.

Advance tickets can be purchased at the following Le Mars locations: American Bank, First National Bank (downtown), Primebank and Hy-Vee customer service.
