Gerald J. Ostert, 92, of Le Mars, died suddenly Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at his home.

Gerald John Ostert was born June 18, 1920, on the family farm in Union Township, rural Remsen, to John T. and Ella M. (Phelan) Ostert. Gerald was baptized at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. He received his education at Union Consolidated School.

As a young man, he worked as a painter for a few years. He also served his country in the United States Navy.

Gerald was united in marriage to Rita M. Cronin on July 12, 1946, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. Gerald and Rita were blessed with two daughters, Judy and JoAnn. He worked for Wells Dairy for over 42 years, as the supervisor in the mix department.

Gerald enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, reading, gardening, and woodworking. He was very talented with his hands and mind. He had the ability to repair almost anything that needed attention.

He enjoyed sitting outdoors and just watching nature at its finest. He will be remembered by his family for his delicious popcorn and fried potatoes.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and longtime member of the Le Mars Eagles Club.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Rita, of Le Mars; two daughters, Judy Nielsen and her husband, Tarris, of Marcus, and JoAnn Evans and her husband, Norbert, of Le Mars; three grandchildren, Ann Marie (Lance) Pedersen, David Nielsen, and Jennie Evans; three great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Erin Pedersen, and Chloe Evans; two brothers-in-law, Lolan (Donna) Cronin, of Le Mars and George Ericksen, of Remsen; a sister-in-law, JoEllen Cronin, of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, John T. and Ella M. (Phelan) Ostert; four sisters, Lila Ufken, Ethel White, Shirley Ericksen, and Bonnie Reistroffer; his parents-in-law, Jerry W. and Martha S. Cronin; and a brother-in-law, Ronald Cronin.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Paul Eisele officiating. Interment will be at St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery, at Oyens. Visitation with the family present will be after 4 p.m. today (Monday) at the Carlsen-Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 7 p.m. scriptural wake service Monday evening at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Lolan Cronin, Tarris Nielsen, Norbert Evans, Lance Pedersen, David Nielsen, and Jeremy Pedersen.
