Ronald Ruhland, 78, of Remsen, died peacefully with family at his side Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012 at his home in Remsen, following a lengthy illness.

Ron was born Nov. 23, 1933, the son of Ben and Leone (Kemp) Ruhland. He was raised and educated at rural Le Mars attending both rural school and St. Joseph's School. He then served in the U.S. Army for three years.

On Nov. 7, 1956, he married Ellen Thill at Remsen. The couple farmed south of Remsen for 32 years before moving into Remsen. He then worked at Moeller's Furniture and drove school bus for 20 years.

Ron was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church and 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing cards, wood crafting and bowling.

Survivors include: his wife Ellen, of Remsen; two sons, Guy (Tammy), Doug (Susie) and a daughter, Mary Lynn (Fred) Frericks, all of Remsen; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Larry (Dorothy) Ruhland, of Le Mars, Danny (Charlene), of Remsen, Glen (Alice), of Le Mars; two sisters, LaVonne (Paul) Loutsch, of Remsen, Mary Lee (Don) Neubrand, of Le Mars; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Arens and Joyce (Dale) Loutsch, both of Remsen; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Ann Ruhland in infancy; a sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Ruhland, and a brother-in-law, Don Arens.

Funeral service were10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial was in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen. Graveside military honors were conducted by VFW Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation was anytime after 4 p.m. Sunday, with a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Chalice presentation, all at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home and Monument in Remsen.

Casket bearers were Nichole Niehus, Katie Jo Wingert, Rebecca and Amanda Ruhland, Brittney Frericks, Tim Ruhland, Mitch Frericks and Nathan Ruhland.

K of C honorary bearers were Lloyd Wolf, Keith Arens, Gib Schroeder, Duane Majeres, Tony Delperdang, Alan Loutsch, Dave Augustine and Paul Pick.
