Gehlen, LCS students earned All-State Music honors

One Gehlen Catholic High School music student and 11 Le Mars Community High School musicians are among the 1,084 students statewide who have been chosen for the All-State Music Festival for 2012.

Auditions were held Saturday, Oct. 20, at six locations in Iowa.

Gehlen and LCS students competed at Storm Lake.

"The All-State audition process is very rigorous and any time we have students selected, we are extremely happy," said Randy Ewing, LCS vocal director. "The students work hard to complete the process, and we are very proud of their efforts regardless of the outcome."

Josie Schipper, a sophomore at Gehlen Catholic, was selected for the All-State Chorus.

Also auditioning were Gehlen students Sarah Roder, junior; Carli Bollin, sophomore; Colten Gerloff, freshman and Aaron Britt, sophomore.

Gehlen's vocal music instructor is Terra Goplen.

Le Mars Community High School had 11 students selected for the All-State event. They are:

* Chorus -- Karter Ewing, junior, third year; Michal McGrew, senior, first year; Trevor Kliever, sophomore, first year and Evan Richards, senior, first year.

* Orchestra -- Marty Balmer, violin, selected for first violin, his third year for All-State; Natalie Siebens, violin, selected as second violin, first year; and Paige McDougall, violin, selected as first alternate.

* Band -- Yashila Permeswaran, senior, bassoon, second year; Rebecca Luksan, senior, percussion, first year; and Peter Meis, sophomore, euphonium, first year.

Chosen as an alternate for the band was Dominic Loutsch, freshman, percussion.

Those auditioning for chorus who were recalled by the judges and not selected were: Liz Bixenman, junior; Dominick Castle, junior; Elizabeth Ericksen, sophomore; Katy Price, sophomore; Jessica Rahn, junior; Andrew Ritts, sophomore.

Also auditioning for chours but not moving on were: Emily Ahlers, sophomore; Travis Barrett, junior; David Brown junior; Chantel Cockburn, sophomore; Erin Connor, junior; Lexie Klingbeil, sophomore; Zach Lerdal, senior; Alyson McGrew, junior; Tevita Moa-Lamp, senior; Maria Renken, freshman; Miranda Ritts, junior; Josh Sluiter, junior; Matt Strub, senior; Tom Toel, sophomore; Blake Wendt, senior; Ben White, junior, and Emily Zink, sophomore.

Randy Ewing is the high school vocal music instructor.

For orchestra, David Barker auditioned on the cello, but was not selected, according to director Ted Hallberg.

Other students auditioning for the All-State Band were:

Anna Tonsfeldt, senior, clarinet; Cody Hatfield, sophomore, flute; Kelsey Moeller, sophomore, flute; Nicole Schimek, sophomore, flute; Drew Weiner, senior, alto saxophone; Aimee Luksan, sophomore, percussion; Ben Meis, senior, oboe; Ellen Meis, sophomore, alto saxophone; Brendan Harms, senior, trumpet; Zach Kooistra, senior, trumpet, Emma Parry, sophomore, trumpet and Jacob Pierce, senior, tuba.

Instrumental music director is Curt Ohrlund.

The 2012 Iowa All State Music Festival will be Nov. 17 at the Hilton Coliseum on the Iowa State University campus in Ames.

Guest conductors for this year's festival are: Orchestra - Joseph Guinta, West Des Moines; Chorus - Dr. Jerry Blackstone, Ann Arbor, Mich., and Band - Dr. Linda Moorhouse, Baton Rouge, La.

The Iowa All-State Music Festival is jointly sponsored and staffed by the Iowa High School Music Association and Iowa Music Educators Association to provide a statewide selective festival for the instrumental and choral high school musicians of Iowa.

This is the 66th year for the All-State Music Festival.
