LAURENS -- Remsen-Union's season was ended on Wednesday in the first round of the Class 8-Man playoffs in a 20-14 loss on the road to Laurens-Marathon.
The conditions dictated run-heavy offenses by both teams.
"It rained almost the entire game," Remsen-Union head coach Colin Youde said of the conditions. "The field was super wet and muddy. Not saying that is the reason we lost, but it certainly had a factor in our footing.
"Both teams were packed up tight in the box. It was really just smashing into each other. They just did a nice job of gang tackling us and making plays."
L-M quarterback Matt Cleveland scored for the Chargers (8-2) on the opening drive. L-M scored the 2-point conversion to lead 8-0.
The Rockets (6-4) were forced to put on the next possession, but the L-M returner muffed the punt. Senior running back Jeremy Sanchez scored four plays later on a 3-yard touchdown run. Senior quarterback Cam Kuchel threw a 2-point pass to senior Ethan Van Dam to tie the game at 8-8.
The Chargers scored on both of their next two drives and took a 20-8 lead into halftime. The quick first half saw both teams only have four possessions each on offense.
Kuchel found Van Dam again in the third quarter for a 10-yard touchdown pass to set the final score.
"We had plenty of opportunities left in the game, but we just couldn't get anything substantial going." Youde said.
The Rockets were without junior running back Nick Braun for the final two weeks of the season after he dislocated his shoulder during a win in Week 8 over Remsen St. Mary's. Braun had run for 652 yards and eight touchdowns on 90 carries before the injury.
Sanchez ran 22 times Wednesday for 60 yards and a touchdown. Sanchez was R-U's leading rusher this season with 659 yards and six touchdowns on 110 carries.
R-U was held to 89 rushing yards on 35 running plays.
Kuchel was 6-for-14 passing for 43 yards and a touchdown. Kuchel ran for 17 yards on five carries. He finished the season 83-for-157 passing for 1,071 yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Kuchel also ran for 297 yards and six touchdowns on 86 attempts this season.
Junior Tanner Hilbrands made two receptions for 27 yards. Hilbrands was the team's leading receiver this season with 27 receptions for 438 yards and eight touchdowns.
Sanchez caught three passes for six yards. Sanchez caught 19 passes for 215 yards and eight touchdowns this season. He also scored five touchdowns on kick and punt returns.
Van Dam's touchdown was his only catch of the game.
Austin Felts made 10 solo stops and eight assisted tackles Wednesday to finish with a season tally of 130 total tackles and 86 solo tackles. Sanchez and Hilbrands each made 11 tackles against L-M to finish as the team's fourth and fifth highest tacklers, respectively.
Kuchel made nine tackles in the loss. Senior Ethan Van Dam, junior Luiz Rodrigues and sophomore Nick Schroeder each made seven tackles. Seniors Andrew Hagert and Austin Schmidt had seven tackles apiece.
Hagert and Van Dam made 96 and 95 total tackles, respectively, second and third-most on the Rockets' defense. Hagert led the team with 12 sacks and Van Dam made eight sacks.
R-U's senior class, including Scott Schroeder, Danny Smith, Jeremy Loutsch and Kyle Arndt amassed a four-year record of 30-12 under Coach Youde.
"They're a great group of kids," Youde said. "A lot of them have played multiple years for me and had a ton of success. It's a hard way to see them go out on a 20-14 loss, but when you look back over their time here, they've helped us get to where we are, be a successful program and being a team that wins and does well every year.
"Each one of them is going to be missed sorely."
