Le Mars wins three of four at Heelan tourney

SIOUX CITY -- Le Mars Community closed the Heelan Classic volleyball tournament with a 3-1 record on Saturday.

No. 12 (4A) Le Mars (23-12) defeated Sioux City East (12-24) 28-26, 25-16. The Lady Bulldogs then won 25-23, 25-9 over No. 11 (4A) Lewis Central (17-11).

Le Mars' only loss of the tournament was a 16-25, 25-14, 15-13 defeat at the hands of No. 4 (3A) Sioux Center (24-6).

The Lady Bulldogs finished off the day with a 24-26, 25-20, 15-12 win over Ridge View (28-7), ranked No. 11 in Class 2A.

"We had a great day," said Le Mars head coach Susan Irwin. "The girls played well together and were able to execute when needed. They made adjustments throughout the day to make them stronger."

Madison Heidebrink hit 25 kills and made six blocks in her return to the team after suffering a head injury in a match on Oct. 4. Heidebrink also hit one ace serve on 30-for-30 serving.

"Madison came back and played well," Irwin said. "Holly (Schneider) came in a few times to help out and did a great job."

Kommes led Le Mars with 31 kills. Britney Thompson had 22 kills in the tournament. Carolyn Ahlers and Morgan Ohm each hit 17 kills. Emily Pick finished with five kills and 91 assists over the four matches.

Kommes was 25-for-26 serving with two aces and five blocks. Ahlers made four blocks and finished 16-for-16 serving. Thompson was 44-for-44 serving with one ace. Sydney Rohde hit one ace on 5-for-5 serving.

"Sydney Rhode also gave us some key serves during matches," Irwin said. "We had a strong block throughout the day and our serving has been tremendous."

Emily Ellefson made a team-best 16 digs Saturday and finished 3-for-3 serving. Pick was 45-for-49 serving and Ohm finished 26-for-31.

Le Mars will finish the regular season on Thursday at Spirit Lake. The Lady Bulldogs will open play in Class 4A Region 3 on Thursday, Oct. 25 against Humboldt or Spencer.
