Francis 'Frank' Heuertz

Friday, October 12, 2012

Francis 'Frank' Heuertz, 79, a longtime resident of Westminster, Colo., and a former electrician, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at Clear Creek Care Center in Westminster, where he had been a resident for the past five years.

Frank was born in Le Mars on March 4, 1933, the son of Bernard and Elizabeth (Haverkamp) Heuertz. He was raised in Remsen, with three sisters, Therese, Rosie and Shirley, and one brother, Joe. They all attended and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School.

Frank had his own farm and raised Hampshire pigs. In 1960 he decided farming was no longer for him and he moved to Colorado.

In 1962 he decided to become an electrician and went to work for Melody Homes in Northglenn, Colo.

On May 26, 1967, Frank married Shirley Porth and took on the responsibility of four step-children.

The one thing Frank enjoyed were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed the birthday parties when he made homemade ice cream, the raking of fall leaves so the grandkids could jump and scatter them across the lawn to be raked again, Christmas, hiding Easter eggs, playing games and so much more.

Frank also loved gardening, auctions, John Deere tractors, woodworking and what he would just call, "tinkering around."

In April of 1995, Frank retired from QED Electrical Supply where he worked as a salesman. In the fall of that same year he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. After this diagnosis he decided that he and Shirley needed to do a little traveling while they could.

In February 2007 home health care was started for Frank as he was slowly declining. It was determined by April of the same year that he needed round the clock care so he went to reside at Clear Creek Care Center and was there until God called him home.

He is survived by his wife Shirley, two step-sons, Clifford Porth and Stephen (Karon) Porth both of Westminster, Colo.; two step-daughters, Peggy (Loren) Metcalf of Ogallala, Neb., and Alice (Joe) Dudley of Silverthorne, Colo.; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Therese Freking of Le Mars, and Shirley (La Verne) Jaminet of Remsen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Elizabeth (Haverkamp) Heuertz; a brother, Joseph Heuertz, and a sister, Rosemary Pick.

Services were held Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the Highland Cemetery, 10201 North Grant St, in Thornton, Colo.

Memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation or PeopleFirst Hospice.
