Steven H. Ommen, 61, of Ceylon, Minn., was called to his eternal rest on Thursday morning, Oct. 4, 2012, at his home in Ceylon.

Steven Henry Ommen was born Aug. 13, 1951, the son of Ervin and Catherine (Feuerstein) Ommen, in Watertown, S.D. He received his education in Clark, S.D., and graduated with the Class of 1969.

Steve served in the United States Army from 1969 until 1971. He then served in the National Guard and then in the United States Navy for a total of 10 1/2 years of service.

He farmed near Trent, S.D., and then attended Dakota State University in Madison, S.D., where he graduated in business-respiratory. Steve was employed at Avera McKennon Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., Weiner Memorial Hospital in Marshall, Minn., and Mid-Dakota Hospital in Chamberlain, S.D.

On Aug. 25, 1973, he was united in marriage to Debra Kittelson in Flandreau, S.D. After their marriage they lived in Lake Park, where Steve was employed at the Lake's Regional Hospital and then to Worthington Community Hospital and then to the Fairmont Medical Center in Fairmont and Moore's Medical in Fairmont. In 1999, they moved from Fairmont to Ceylon.

Steve was employed at Allina Health in New Ulm and Owatonna. Due to his ill health he was forced to retire in 1999 after many years as a respiratory therapist and was a supervisor and manager in various places.

Steve was president-secretary of South Dakota Agriculture Movement. He was a city councilman in Ceylon, and Dell Rapids, S.D.; past-president of Northern Plains Sleep Society; state coordinator for South Dakota League of Voters; 20-year member of the American Legion and served on the board of directors of the Iowa Respiratory Association.

He greatly enjoyed reading, fishing and playing softball and golf.

Those left to honor Steve's memory include his wife, Debbie of Ceylon; children, Jennifer (David) Swan of Woodland Park, Colo.; Joy (Dan) Pockrus of Ceylon and Jason (Jenny) Ommen of Ceylon; six grandchildren; mother-in-law, Francis Kittelson of Omaha, Neb.; brother-in-law, Dale and Barb Kittelson of Omaha; nephew, Douglas and Valeria Kittelson of Omaha, Neb.; his Chiwaws dogs, Coccoa and Baby Ray and many aunts and uncles and other relatives and friends.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Catherine Ommen; father-in-law, Dale Kittelson and other relatives.

A Celebration of Life services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christian Church of Fairmont in Fairmont, Minn., with Pastor Michael Gerhardt officiating. Burial will be in Lake Belt Cemetery in rural Ceylon, with full military honors by the Nassen-Detert American Legion Post #529.

The Kramer Funeral Home of Trimont, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.
