ConAgra Foods supporting end to sow gestation stalls

Thursday, September 27, 2012

ConAgra Foods, Inc., one of North America's leading food companies, said Monday the company "is supporting" the elimination of gestation stall housing for sows.

In a short media release, ConAgra pointed to the company's "long-standing commitment to the humane treatment and handling of animals" as a factor in the company's support for the change.

The release said ConAgra is "asking our pork suppliers to present actionable plans by 2017 that address both the elimination of gestation stalls and creation of traceability systems within the pork supply chain."

The release further stated that ConAgra recognizes that "implementing a phase-out may be a long-term process, and could take up to 10 years" and the company "intends to continue working with pork suppliers who share our commitment to the best animal welfare and handling practices."

Chris Kirchner, ConAgra media representative, said no additional comment or information is available at this time regarding the company's announcement.

ConAgra Foods has brands in 97 percent of American households.
