Evelyn was born Sept. 1, 1922. She grew up in Bayard, and spent her young years going to school and graduating from high school there. She went to one year of college, and taught school for several years before marrying Lloyd Hulsebus. They farmed many years in the Denison area. They had three daughters, Eileen, Mary and Becky.
She always liked oil painting, all kinds of art, and photography. She started a photo studio and ran that for many years.
In 1972 she moved to Sioux City, and bought a home across from the Morningside College, where Becky went to college, and met her future husband, Tom.
After Becky graduated, Evelyn started renting her home out to foreign girls who were students in college. She had a map of the world and would put a pin from the home country of each of these girls.
In 1976 she went to Africa to visit her sister Reva for a month. Reva was a missionary nurse who met and married her husband there and that is where they made their home.
In later years Evelyn went to Papua New Guinea where her youngest daughter, Becky and her husband, Tom, were missionaries.
Evelyn enjoyed traveling and seeing other countries.
In her later years, she sold her home and moved to an apartment for seniors, in Sioux City. There she had many friends that she loved to play scrabble with. In 2009 she moved to St. Joseph to be closer to her oldest daughter Eileen. She wouldn't admit it but she was beginning to need more help with everything.
If she were writing this I think she would tell you that her greatest accomplishment was that all -- three of her girls have accepted Christ as their savior. Also she didn't want anyone to be sad at her passing from this life to the next. She said that she wanted celebration, because she is now with our JESUS.
Evelyn was a member of the Grace Evangelical Church, St. Joseph, Mo.
She leaves her daughters, Eileen Giseburt and husband, Mike, Mary Neppl and husband, Steve, and Becky Feldpausch and husband, Tom. She also leaves her brother Eugene Phelps and wife, Shirley, and a sister, Ruth Croft, as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at the Le Mars Bible Church, in Le Mars, with Pastor Fred Gums officiating. Evelyn has been cremated under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home, of St. Joseph, Mo.
