Lyndell Fred Schmid, 77, of Heron Lake, Minn., died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, at his home in Heron Lake after a lingering illness.

Lyndell was born Oct. 9, 1934, in Merrill, the son of Fred and Irene (Trometer) Schmid. He was baptized and confirmed in Iowa and grew up on a farm there. He graduated from Union High School in 1953 and then continued on to two years of college.

He was married to Wilma Clark in 1956; to this marriage Lee and Tracy were born. The marriage was later dissolved.

In 1956, he joined the United States Army, and after basic training, he was stationed in Augusta, Ga. Lynn was honorably discharged in 1958 and continued his education with a bachelor of arts and master's degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D.

After completing his college education he began his teaching career in Winner, S.D., Sioux City (Iowa) Central and Rapid City (S.D.) Central teaching speech and coaching debate. Lynn then went to Worthington, Minn., to teach in 1968. At Worthington High School he also taught speech and coached debate for his final 27 years.

On Dec. 21, 1974, he was married to Mary (Diemer) Freking at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington. Together their family was complete with seven children. After retirement from teaching in 1997, Lynn and Mary moved north to a lake house on Townline Lake in rural Longville, Minn., where they enjoyed fishing and living in "God's Country."

After becoming legally blind, Lynn enjoyed his coffee time with the "Mini Mart Crew" in Heron Lake and the Corner Junction/One Stop Crew in Longville.

Lynn was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Longville, Minn. Before retirement, he enjoyed fishing, trapping, selling Midwestern Homes and gardening.

Lynn loved humor and was an accepting person. He was a true farmer at heart. His most precious moments were spent with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include: his wife of 37 years, Mary of Heron Lake, Minn.; his seven children, Lee (René) Schmid, of Springhill, Kan., Tracy (Greg) Reddell, of Street, Md., Kevin (Dana) Schmid, of Worthington, Minn., Maria Vosberg, of Heron Lake, Minn., Mark (Jane) Schmid, of Courtland, Minn., Christina (Maury) Kuehl, of Dovray, Minn., and Katie Lais, of Windom, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his siblings, Lynnette (Roger) Wilson, of Paullina, Donna (Lanny) Nairn, of Marlton, N.J., and Gary (Sandy) Schmid, of Remsen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, David Schmid; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A memorial service was held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 25, at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Heron Lake, with the Rev. Rachel Wrenn officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the church. Osterberg - Hansen Funeral Home in Lakefield was in charge of the arrangements.
