Richard J. Stoos, 71, of Remsen, died surrounded by his family Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at his home in Remsen after a lengthy illness.

Rich was born Nov. 26, 1940, the son of Henry and Margaret (Gollhofer) Stoos. He was raised and educated in Remsen. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1959. He then entered the US Marine Corp on July 2, 1959, and was stationed in camp Pendleton in California. He was honorably discharged on July 1, 1963. He then moved back to Remsen.

On Feb. 27, 1965, he married Suzanne Snyder at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. The couple purchased Richard's Drive-Inn in 1967 and they operated it as a family business until September 1986.

Rich also worked for the United States Postal Service starting as a rural route carrier May 24, 1968, and retiring July 1, 2006.

Rich was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters & American Legion Post 220, all of Remsen.

Survivors include his wife Sue, of Remsen; six children, Jeff (Bev) Stoos, of Remsen and their children Jason, Zachary and Cassandra, Jodi (Nick) Ruba, of Prior Lake, Minn., and their children Jordan and Ali, Brian (Sharon) Stoos, of Remsen, and their children Cody and Molly, Chris (Kim) Stoos, of Sergeant Bluff, and their children Joshua and Colby, Beth (Dave) Tentinger, of Remsen, and their children Danika, Madison, Brianna and Bryce Tentinger, Kara (Kelly) Thompson, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one sister, LaNette (Thomas) Nacke, of Culleoka, Tenn.; seven brothers, Larry (Cindy) Stoos, of Remsen, Stanley (Rosie) Stoos, of Pensacola, Fla., Robert Stoos, of Remsen, Dean Stoos and his friend Linda Stansberry, of Dakota City, Neb., Leo (Terri) Stoos, of Hinton, Randy (Mary) Stoos and Doug Stoos, all of Remsen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother & father-in-law, Robert and Mary Jane Snyder; and two nephews, Michael and Keith Stoos.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy and Deacon Rick Roder officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen with an escort provided by the Patriot Guard Riders. Graveside military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 3328 & American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 2 p.m. Friday. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by a Catholic Order of Foresters rosary, all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

Casket bearers will be Jason and Zachary Stoos, Jordan Ruba, Cody Stoos, Joshua and Colby Stoos and Bryce Tentinger.

Honorary bearers will be Cassandra Stoos, Ali Ruba, Molly Stoos, Danika, Madison and Brianna Tentinger.
