Bernard Joseph Grady, the son of William C. Grady and Vera (Pollard) Grady, was born April 16, 1929, in Schuyler, Neb. As an adult he made his home in Le Mars and then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On June 24, 1953, Bernard was united in marriage to Mary Weenink. To this union four children were born, Margaret, Patty, Cheryl and Michael.
On Aug. 11, 1993, Bernard was united in marriage to Berdena Bleeker at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Bernard operated Grady Construction with his brother Bill for several years. From the construction industry, Bernard began employment with Vince Engle and Earl Utesch at McCormick Distributing Company in Le Mars. Bernard later became co-owner of McCormick's with Marv Albers in 1978.
Bernard was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars.
He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a 50-year member of the American Legion.
Bernard enjoyed watching all types of sports, playing cards, fishing and golf, and especially meeting up with many close friends for coffee.
During the winter months Bernard and Bea spent their time at their home in Surprise Arizona.
He is survived by his wife, Berdena of Le Mars; three daughters: Margaret Berry and Gerald Reynolds of Bowling Green, Ky., Patty (Doug) Thoma of Newton, and Cheryl (Denny) Van Voorst of Le Mars; a brother, William C. Grady, Jr. (Arlene), of Le Mars; six grandchildren: Tommy and Heather Berry of Bowling Green, Ky., Timmy Berry, of Louisville, Ky., Christina Jones, of Bowling Green, Ky., Matthew Thoma, of Newton, Travis and Jill Van Voorst, of Le Mars, and Troy and Tiffany Van Voorst, of Le Mars; and five great-grandchildren: Michael Jones, Cameron Van Voorst, Bryler Berry, Kyler and Kohen Van Voorst. He is also survived by Berdena's family: Jo and Dave Van Gorp and families, of Orange City, Cheryl and Terry Maassen and families, of Lincoln, Neb., and Bob and Mary Bleeker and families, of Surprise, Ariz.
Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; a son Michael in 1972; a brother, Jerry; a sister, Veronica Cogswell; a niece Geri Ann Grady; and a granddaughter Stephanie Van Voorst
Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. today (Tuesday) at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Kevin Richter of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars. Visitation was after 3 p.m. Monday, at the Carlsen-Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present after 5 p.m. to greet friends followed by a 7 p.m. scriptural wake service and Knights of Columbus Rosary Monday evening at the funeral home. Visitation continued from 9 a.m. until service time at the church Tuesday morning.
Pallbearers were Travis Van Voorst, Troy Van Voorst, Matthew Thoma, Tommy Berry, Rick Kneip, and Tim Grady.
