WEC champions RSM rolls South O'Brien

Monday, July 9, 2012

REMSEN -- Remsen St. Mary's closed its War Eagle Conference championship baseball season with an 8-5 victory over South O'Brien Friday night.

RSM (22-8, 15-5 War Eagle Conference play) clinched the WEC championship Thursday night despite a 14-11 loss to Unity Christian. Hinton's 4-3 win over Spalding was the Spartans' seventh conference loss of the season. Hinton also finished with seven WEC losses and South O'Brien (16-9, 12-8) had seven entering Friday night's game.

Friday night's win looked far from certain for the Hawks in the first inning. RSM committed three errors in the inning, which allowed the Wolverines to gain an early 3-0 advantage.

RSM answered with a run in the bottom of the first, but South O'Brien would score another run in the third inning. The Hawks finally took control of the game in the fourth inning thanks to three errors by the visitors.

"In the fourth inning, is kind of what we looked like in the first inning is what South O'Brien looked like in the fourth inning,"said RSM co-head coach Jim Wesselmann. "It was kind of an ugly game."

RSM still led 5-4 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior Beau Pick led off with a triple. Pick would score on a single by sophomore Matthew Wesselmann.

Senior Nick Weiler entered as a courtesy runner for Wesselmann. Weiler would score all the way from first on an RBI double by junior Tyler Delperdang.

"That was the big blow," Wesselmann said. "It gave us an extra cushion."

The Hawks led 8-4 going into the seventh inning. Wesselmann pitched a complete game for RSM and allowed one run in the seventh inning, only South O'Brien's second run since the error-aided three-run first.

"Matt settled down and gave up a single run in the third and a single run in the seventh," Wesselmann said. "Other than that, in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth he kind of controlled them and put them down."

Wesselmann finished with just two earned runs allowed on seven hits. The sophomore struck out five batters and walked just one.

Pick and Delperdang both finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Pick scored twice and Delperdang scored once.

Senior catcher Cody Colling hit 1-for-2 and earned two walks. Colling stole one base and scored one run. Wesselmann was 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Weiler scored twice running for Wesselmann.

RSM kicks off postseason play Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Remsen with a Class 1A District 2 quarterfinals game against Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn.
