Elizabeth Jeanette was born March 24, 1926, in Inwood, the daughter of John G. and Jennie (Snieder) Byker. She was raised at Presho, S.D., Rock Valley, and Grand Rapids, Mich. She graduated from the Cresten High School in Grand Rapids.
On March 4, 1948, she married James Henry Jansen in Grand Rapids. They made their home on an acreage near Alton, where she was a homemaker. She was also employed at the Sioux County Assessor's Office, the Sioux Abstract Company, as a Head Start cook, and in the food service area of Northwestern College, all in Orange City. "Jim" died Dec. 12, 1988, in Sioux City.
"Beth" then moved into Alton and served as the clerk of Nassau Township. In June 2009, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society.
She was a member of the Alton Reformed Church and its Women's Ministries, as well as the Floyd American Legion Post Auxiliary in Alton. She also served on the Sioux County Election Board.
Mrs. Jansen enjoyed crocheting, gardening, making crafts, playing Bingo at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City, and singing with the Keenagers. She was an accomplished seamstress and looked forward to spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her six children: Gregory (Becky) Jansen and their family, Noah (Sybil) and their children Aiden and Abigail, Laura, Isaiah and special friend Ashley Abbott, and Micah and special friend Katelyn Van Klombenburg; Gwen (Tom) Jones and their family, Leslie (Roger) Knobbe and their children Augustus and Cecelia, September (Brian) Wanzenried and daughter Lily, and Thomas (Heidi) Jones and their daughter Adelaide and son due in September; Kevin (Nancy) Jansen and their family, Nathan (Kayse), Aaron, Daniel, Levi, and Josiah; Valerie (Michael) Weaver and their family, Cameron, Mitchell, Terry (Kelly) and their children Brett, James and Jared, and Trista and her daughters Shaya and Bryah; Kimberly (Gary) Waddell and their family, Tiffany (Justin) Holman and son due in October, Charissa and special friend Tyler Ziementz, Rochelle (Jacob) Chapman and their children Trinity, Hunter, Brooklyn, Brek, Presten and Denver; and Chelsey (James) Van Roekel and their children Landon, Carter, and daughter due in September; and Joni Hofmeyer and sons Taylor and Travis and special friend Mel Babcock; a sister, Dorothy (Jerry) Van Maanen, two sisters-in-law, Margaret and Dorothy Byker, and a brother-in-law, Loren Renkema, all of Michigan; and a sister-in-law, Alice Byker, of Rock Rapids.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters, Gerrit Byker, Helen (Lambert) Smitter, Eugene Byker, Katherine (Robert) Vander Bok, John Byker, Betty Renkema, and Stevena (John) Scholten.
There will be a celebration of her life at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Alton Reformed Church in Alton. The Rev. Dr. C. Orville Kool will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton. There will be a prayer service on Friday, at 9:30 a.m., at the church.
Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today (Thursday), with the family present from 6:30-8 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
