HARTLEY -- The Gehlen Catholic softball team used two big innings to defeat Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Wednesday in Hartley.
The Lady Jays (20-10) jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the second inning. Senior Amber Timmins led off the inning with a single, and she was sacrificed to second by junior Abby Freking.
Four straight singles by sophomore Alison Schnepf, senior Brittany Loutsch, junior Abigail Krienert and junior Shannon Smith followed and plated four runs.
The Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to one. Tressa DeBoer scored on a passed ball before Jess Stoferan hit a two-run home run.
But Gehlen pulled away with four runs in the fourth.
Loutsch reached on an error to start the inning and later scored when Smith also reached on an error. After a single by Brittany Krienert put runners at first and second, Gunter hit a three-run home run.
The Lady Jays combined for 10 hits. Gunter was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Schnepf added two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Six other players had one hit.
Timmins pitched a complete game and surrendered three earned runs on five hits. She struck out seven and walked three.
Gehlen will play again Friday at home against Remsen St. Mary's.
