SPENCER -- The Le Mars Community softball team went 2-2 in a tournament in Spencer on Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Bulldogs (23-8) ended the tournament with an 8-1 win over Marcus-Meriden-Cleghornon on Saturday.
The Lady 'Dogs scored two runs in the second inning before pulling away with six runs in the third. The Eagles scored their only run in the fifth inning.
Freshman Janessa Milbrodt pitched a complete game and allowed just three hits. She struck out six and walked three.
The Lady 'Dogs combined for six hits. Milbrodt was 2-for-3 with and RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Madison Heidebrink added a hit and two RBIs. Sophomore Kylee Lang had a hit, two RBIs and a run scored.
Earlier on Saturday, errors cost the Lady 'Dogs in a 7-2 loss to Akron-Westfield. Six of the seven Lady Westerners' runs were unearned.
Le Mars took an early lead with a run in the first inning before A-W put up five runs in the second. The Lady Westerners added two in the fourth before the Lady 'Dogs scored their second run in the fifth.
The Lady 'Dogs combined for just four hits. Junior Ashley Phelan, freshman Holly Schneider, junior Emily Ellefson and freshman Jess VanOtterloo each had one hit. VanOtterloo had an RBI and Phelan scored the only run.
Milbrodt pitched four innings and gave up seven runs, one earned, on no hits. She struck out three and walked seven.
Freshman Jayme Kelly pitched three innings and surrendered no runs on three hits.
In their second game of the tournament on Friday, the Lady 'Dogs lost 10-3 to Denison-Schleswig.
The Lady 'Dogs struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Monarchs scored two runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead.
Le Mars tied it with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Lady Monarchs took control with two runs in the third and two more in the fourth.
In the top of the sixth inning, two singles and a hit batsman loaded the bases for the Lady Monarchs. Three walks and an error followed to plate four runs. The Lady 'Dogs scored their third run in the sixth inning when Heidebrink singled and MIlbrodt doubled before Lang produced an RBI ground-out.
Kelly saw her first action on the rubber for the Lady 'Dogs. She started the game and pitched the first three innings. Junior Molly Renken pitched the next two innings and gave up two runs before leaving the game with shin splints. Kelly came back in to pitch the final inning.
The Lady 'Dogs combined for seven hits. Lang was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Milbrodt added two hits and an RBI. Heidebrink was 2-for-2.
In their first game of the tournament on Friday, the Lady 'Dogs defeated Newell-Fonda 7-3.
Back-to-back doubles by Schneider and Ellefson got the Le Mars on the board in the top of the first inning. The Tigers took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Jays took control of the game with five runs in the top of the third. Phelan and junior Emily Pick both had two-run singles in the inning. Lang added an RBI double.
In the top of the fifth inning, Heidebrink singled and later scored when Pick gounded out. The Tigers added a consolation run in the bottom of the sixth before the game was called.
Milbrodt pitched five innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits. She struck out four but walked eight. Renken pitched an inning and allowed no runs on no hits. She struck out three and walked one.
The Lady 'Dogs combined for eight hits. Heidebrink was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Pick added a hit, three RBIs and a run scored.
Le Mars will play again Monday at Spirit Lake.
