Mai finishes in top 10

Friday, June 22, 2012

U.S. Army Major Michael Mai is a 10th place finisher in the hammer throw competition at the U.S. Olympic Trials Track and Field Championships in Beaverton, Ore.

Mai, a 1996 Gehlen Catholic High School graduate, is the son of Jim and Donna Mai, of Le Mars.

He was one of 24 men competing in the hammer throw Thursday for a place on the U.S. Olympic Team.

The 34-year-old Mai threw 225 feet, 8 inches. The distance was not enough to qualify him to represent the U.S. at the Summer Games in August.

The hammer competition at Nike World Headquarters was attended by an estimated 3,000 people, including Mai's wife Deidre, his parents and one of his sisters, Charlene Creighton, and her family.

A. G. Kruger, a Sheldon native, finished third with a throw of 242 feet, 6 inches and qualified to compete in London.
