Robert Hoyt Simmons, 83, of Falls Church, Va., and a former Le Mars resident, died Wednesday, June 5, 2012, at his residence.
He was born Sept.13, 1928, in Sioux City, the son of Earl E. and Lola (Hoyt) Simmons. Bob, his sister, Joanne, and his brother, Jerry, lived in and attended school in Nebraska until the untimely death of their mother in 1941. Following their mother's death, the three Simmons children and their grandmother, Mrs. Hattie Hoyt, moved to Le Mars to live with Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Peters and their three children, Betty, Jane, and Donald.
Bob graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1946. After graduation, he served with the U.S. Army of Occupation in Germany.
After completing his military service, he returned to Le Mars and attended Westmar College. Subsequently, he attended and graduated from Drake University (B.A., M.A.) in Des Moines.
Until his retirement in 1994, Bob worked in publishing and administration at research institutes, employed by the Departments of the Navy and Defense in the Washington D.C. area.
In 1956, Bob married Judith Allen in Falls Church, Va. They were blessed with five children, sons Robert Allen, Roderick Hoyt, Kenneth Laird, and Andrew Carr, and a daughter, Jennifer. They also have four grandchildren.
Although Bob left Le Mars many years ago, he always considered it a place of good memories, and he returned many times to visit with family and close friends.
A memorial graveside service was held at the Bloomfield, Neb., City Cemetery today (Thursday, June 21) at 10:30 a.m.
