Sylvester 'Gus' Murphy

Sylvester "Gus" Murphy, 76, of Gilbert, Ariz., and a former Le Mars resident, died Saturday, April 28, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Gus, the son of John Sr. and Mary (Cain) Murphy, was born Nov. 28, 1935. Gus graduated from Gehlen High School in the class of 1954, the first class to graduate from Gehlen. After graduation and serving in the Korean War, he moved to Arizona, where he had resided since.

He was a member of the Phoenix Fire Department, retiring after 28 years as a fire captain.

Gus made lifelong friends with many of his firemen co-workers and neighbors. He was a fun and loving person and will be deeply missed by his friends and many family members.

Those left to mourn his loss include his son and daughter-in-law, Sean and Mimi, and their daughter, Brooke. He is also survived by two brothers, and five sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, and one sister.

Private interment was today (Thursday, May 10) at the Greenwood Cemetery in Phoenix.
