Walter Macklem, 82, of Merrill, died Saturday, April 28, 2012 at his home.

Walter Lloyd Macklem was born July 17, 1929, near James, the son of Cecil and Hannah (Nicol) Macklem. He attended country school near his home and graduated from Hinton High School with the Class of 1947.

He served his country in the Iowa National Guard with the 133rd Infantry 34th Division from 1948 to 1957.

Walter was united in marriage to Bonnie McLain Aug. 26, 1950, at Hinton Methodist Church. The couple made their home in Merrill.

Walter drove truck his entire career; having driven for Cudahy Packing Plant, Boyer Provisions, Sherman's Produce, and Rosenthal's Fruit Company until retirement in 1992.

He was a longtime member of Grace Evangelical Church in Hinton. Walter had been a member of the Masonic Triangle Lodge No. 643 AF &AM in Leeds since April 18, 1961.

During retirement, Walter enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and having coffee with his friends. He also enjoyed the opportunities to help his friend Harold Tooker on the farm as needed.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Bonnie, of Merrill; three children: a son, Douglas Macklem and his wife, Paula of Terra Haute, Ind., and their children, Weston and Jamie; a daughter, Mary Guffy and her husband, Terry, of Bronson, and their children Stacy (Cody) Meyers, and Travis Guffy; a daughter, Susan Birks and her husband, Pat, of Sioux City and their children Stephanie (Tyler) Hoppe and Ashley Birks; seven great-grandchildren: Hannah Birks, Karsen Birks Condon, Brenick Hoppe, Briar Hoppe, Lauren Meyers, Avery Myers, and Brenna Meyers; a brother, Ron Macklem and his wife Andy of Minneapolis, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter Cristy Guffy; a brother, Jim (Jean) Macklem; and four sisters, Gertrude (Leslie) Bates, Jessie (Loran) Bates, Ellen (Art) Powers, Dorothy (Floyd) Pfalmer.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars with the Rev. Dave Steinberg of Grace Evangelical Church officiating. Inurnment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill. Visitations with the family present will be after 5 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service and Masonic Service.
