Verna Lehmann, 97, of Bloomington, Minn., and formerly of Akron, died Thursday, April 19, 2012, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minn.

Verna Mildred Maria Gillmann was born Oct. 15, 1914, near Sioux Center, the daughter of the Rev. E.H. and Emma (Schulz) Gillmann. She was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church near Sioux Center. She was later confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Merrill.

Verna was raised in Merrill, where she attended school. She graduated from Merrill High School in 1934.

Verna was united in marriage to Clarence Lehmann March 17, 1936, in Sioux City. They lived on several farms in Plymouth County before moving to Akron. Early on, Verna was a homemaker for her family. Later, she went to work for the Akron Hospital and later Akron Care Center as a housekeeper. She retired at the age of 62 after 19 years of service. Clarence died April 16, 1983.

Verna continued to live in Akron. In 2001, she moved to Bloomington, Minn., to be closer to her family.

Verna was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron for many years where she was a member of the Ladies Aid, sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school for many years, played the organ, and was a member of the "Sunshine Gals."

Through the years, Verna enjoyed embroidery work, reading, and playing the organ. She was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins and Timberwolves. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include three daughters: Sharon Bliven (Jerry), of Burnsville, Minn, Darlene Meadors (Larry), of Burnsville, Minn., and Carole Dowling (Harold), of Ramsey, Minn.; a son: Darrell Lehmann (Lorraine), of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; and six sisters and six brothers.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. today (Monday) at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. The Rev. Jean Morse will officiate. Following a luncheon, burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Merrill. Visitation with the family present will be from noon until service time on Monday at the church.
