Dorothy M. Petersen, 94, of Marcus, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at the Cherokee Nursing and Rehab Center in Cherokee.
Dorothy Mae Petersen was born Feb. 26, 1918, in Marcus, the daughter of Clarence "Shorty" and Mary (Noe) Dorr. She was educated in Marcus and graduated from Marcus High School in 1936. After school Dorothy began a 19-year career with the Simonson Mill-Rendering Plant in Quimby, where she specialized in advertising.
On Nov. 25, 1945, Dorothy and Harold W. Petersen were united in marriage in Marcus where the couple made their home.
Dorothy later worked part-time in Storm Lake, at the service office of Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. Harold died July 11, 1981.
Dorothy played piano and later organ at the Cleghorn and Cherokee Church of Christ for more than 20 years. She spent two months in 1945 at Des Moines where she served as a clerk for Representative Dr. Warren Simonsen.
She was active in the Marcus Garden Club and served as its president for many years. She also volunteered as an entry clerk in the flower department at the Marcus Fair for five years.
She became a resident at the Cherokee Nursing and Rehab Center July 20, 2010.
Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her brother, Ron E. Dorr, of Boca Raton, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harold; and a sister Evelyn Hendrickson.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, at the Earnest - Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus. The Rev. Tom Lewis will officiate. Burial will follow at Marcus - Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today (Monday) at the Earnest - Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday and will continue until the funeral.
