Mary Ann was born July 25, 1917, in Granville, the daughter of Jacob and Cecelia (Goebel) Klein. Mary Ann was raised in the Granville area and received her education at St. Joseph's Catholic School in Granville.
On June 3, 1941, she married Julius J. (Jule) Penning in Granville. The couple farmed in the Granville area until 1970 and moved into Granville in 1986.
Mary Ann was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and church guild, Catholic Daughters of America and Catholic Order of Foresters.
Survivors include her 13 children, Joellen (Jo) Penning, of Omaha, Neb., Stanley D., of Clinton, Ind., Thomas J. and his wife, Nancy, of Owatonna, Minn., Alan H., of Watertown, S.D., Duane E. and his wife, Teresa, of Granville, Conrad L. and his wife, Mickey, of Sumas, Wash., Judith, Kirschbaum and her husband, Frank, of Rockford, Ill., Mary Kay Fry and her husband, Steve, of Gunnison, Colo., Julius H., of Houston, Texas, Junell Grady and her husband, Steve, of Archer, Pamela Plathe and her husband, Kevin, of Alton, Therese Jungers and her husband, Kenneth, of Hospers, Suzanne Plathe and her husband, Reed, of Le Mars; 41 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Sister Tresa Klein O.S.F., of Dubuque; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Bueltel, of Sioux City, and Kitty Penning, of Granville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jule, on March 23, 1992; a son, Merlin, in 2002; a granddaughter, Martha Mary Penning (infant daughter of Merlin).
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Granville with the Rev. Richard Ball officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Granville. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Granville.
Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Casket bearers will be her sons, Stanley, Thomas, Alan, Duane, Conrad and Julius.
