Arlyn Van Berkum, 67, of Le Mars, died Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, following a brief illness.

Arlyn Van Berkum was born Oct. 23, 1944, in Rock Valley, the son of James and Magdalene (Vande Berg) Van Berkum. He graduated from Rock Valley High School in 1962 and continued his education at Morningside College in Sioux City.

In 1966, Arlyn was inducted into the United States Navy. He spent his time during the Vietnam War aboard the U.S.S. St. Paul. Following his honorable discharge, Arlyn returned to Rock Valley.

On July 2, 1971, Arlyn and Vicki Lee Vander Vegte were united in marriage at Elk Point, S.D.

Arlyn worked for the State of Iowa as a health inspector for 25 years.

He was a member of Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #1381.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Wendy Payer and her husband, Tom, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Megan Wissmueller and her husband, Eric of Milwaukee, Wis.; his son, Andy of Le Mars; four grandchildren, Jacob and Johannah Payer and Atticus and Laurelyne Wissmueller; a sister, Eleanor (Dewey) Lawrence, of Spencer; brothers, James, of Rock Valley, Leslie (Mary Jane), of Le Mars, and John (Denise), of N. Muskegon, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife Vicki on March 1, 2012.

A time for family and friends to gather will take place today (Tuesday) at the American Legion Club, 110 Plymouth St. S.W., Le Mars from 2- 4 p.m.

The Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars is assisting Arlyn's family with arrangements.
