Rockets hold on to defeat Hawks in WEC play

REMSEN -- It was down to the wire but Remsen-Union held on to defeat cross-town rival Remsen St. Mary's 46-43 in War Eagle Conference action on Friday night in Remsen.

The visiting Rockets led their hosts by as many as 13 points late in the third quarter but the Hawks outscored their rivals 13-5 in the final eight minutes to have a shot in the waning seconds.

Matthew Wesselmann connected on one of two fourth-quarter 3-point baskets with 4:26 to play to pull his Hawks within three, trailing 43-40. Nate Roder scored at the 3:04 mark to pull the Hawks within a point, down 43-42 but Tanner Hilbrands opened the Rockets' lead back to three with 1:49 to play.

The Hawks had the chance to pull within a point from the foul line with 27 seconds to play and shots to tie did not fall. Hilbrands knocked down 1-of-2 from the charity stripe with 24 seconds remaining to secure the 46-43 win for the Rockets.

Hilbrands scored a game-high 16 points to lead R-U while Cam Kuchel and Alex Hansen each scored 10 on the night. Hansen grabbed 11 rebounds while Hilbrands crashed eight boards and Kuchel dished out five assists.

Beau Pick scored 14 points to lead the Hawks while Wesselmann scored 10 and Tyler Delperdang added eight.

R-U hosts Akron-Westfield on Tuesday while RSM travels to Spalding Catholic tonight (Monday).
