Alice Margaretha Catharina Oetken Reid, 89, of San Ramon, Calif., passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, at her home.
Alice was born on July 22, 1922 at the family home on a farm in Plymouth County, Le Mars, Iowa. Alice was the second of eight children born to John and Gretha Oetken. The other children were Herman, Lucille Slay (deceased), Laura Campbell (deceased), Laurence (deceased), Donald, Kenneth (deceased), and Marlene Arens.
Alice became a child of God and an heir to the Kingdom of Heaven by the Sacrament of Holy Baptism.
Alice grew up on a farm in Iowa and attended schools in that area. She was baptized and confirmed in the American Lutheran Church (Christ Lutheran Church) in Grant Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. She was a member there until she moved to Richmond, Calif., in 1942.
Alice and her sister Lucille went to California on a vacation and fell in love with the San Francisco Bay area. Instead of returning to Iowa, they found employment at the Southern Pacific Railroad office in San Francisco and moved to an apartment on 20th Avenue.
In 1947, Alice met John Reid and on Jan. 25, 1948, they were married at Zion Lutheran Church in San Francisco. This marriage was blessed with one son, Thomas, born Feb. 18, 1949. After Tom was born, Alice resigned from her job and became a full time mother and homemaker.
Alice and John purchased their first home in San Bruno in May 1951 and Alice resided there until 2006 when she moved to the Merrill Gardens community in San Ramon, Calif.
They were members at Calvary Lutheran Church in San Bruno since 1976.
Alice returned to work in 1963 when she was employed as an instructional aide for students with learning disabilities in the San Bruno Park School District. She retired in August, 1984.
Alice and John enjoyed almost 42 years of marriage. On Nov. 26, 1989, the Lord took John home. On Dec. 31, 2009, Tom's wife, Judith, joined John in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Alice is survived by her son Thomas, her granddaughter Lorien Quirk and her husband, Luke, and their daughter, Adelaide. She is also survived by her brothers, Herman and Donald and his wife, Dixie; her sister, Marlene Arens and her husband, Tom; a brother-in-law, Leonard Campbell; and many relatives and friends
She was also preceded in death by her in-laws, Frances Oetken, Shirley Oetken, Sandra Oetken and James Slay.
Inurnment will be next to John at Golden Gate National Cemetery. At Alice's request, no services are planned at this time.
