Thomas G. Mertes, 62, of Le Mars, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011 at his home in Le Mars.
Thomas Glen Mertes was born July 20, 1949, in Merrill, the son of James V. and Mae D. (Harms) Mertes. He was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith.
He attended school in Le Mars, and graduated from Le Mars Community High School with the Class of 1967.
Tom served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from Aug. 30, 1968 to his honorable discharge Jan. 14, 1970. Upon his discharge, Tom was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars.
Tom began working for Wells' Dairy on Oct. 13, 1967, and worked in several positions throughout his career. For the last several years, Tom worked at the South Ice Cream Plant.
Tom enjoyed visiting and getting together with his brothers for family gatherings.
Survivors include his three brothers, James Mertes and his wife, Tomoko, of Le Mars, Charles Mertes and his wife, Kirsten Borg, of Des Moines, and Jeff Mertes and his wife, Helen, of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James V. in 1970 and Mae D. (Harms) Mertes in 1995 and his older brother Dennis J. Mertes in 2006.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Daniel Greving officiating. Visitation with the family present will be from 4-7 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will continue Friday morning at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Interment with military honors by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241will be at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.
