Library to hand out books for Halloween

Friday, October 21, 2011

Le Mars Public Library's "Books for Treats" event is coming next week.

It's the sixth year children through grade 5 have had the opportunity to choose a nearly new, gently used book donated by community people.

"Books for Treats" will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon next Saturday, Oct. 29 at the library, 41 First St. S.W.

Last year nearly 600 people participated and more than 400 books were given out, according to a press release.

Lisa Vander Sluis, children's librarian, said in a press release the event wouldn't be able to happen without book donations.

She thanked everyone who has been dropping off books throughout the year, but noted more books are needed for this year's event.

Vander Sluis encouraged people to "check your bookshelves for items your own child may have outgrown, but are still in great condition."

The original "Books for Treats" event began in 1995 in San Jose, Calif., according to the press release.

People can read more about that event on the website www.booksfortreats.org.
