Fern Staab, 85, of Remsen, died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Fern was born June. 17, 1926, at rural Remsen, the daughter of Anthon and Annie (Scharff) Miller.

Fern was raised on a farm south of Remsen. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen.

On Sept. 6, 1950 she married Ervin Staab. The couple made their home on the original Staab farm which is an Iowa Century Farm. Fern helped out with the farming and mowing. She cooked all the meals during harvest time for the whole family and hired help. Ervin died Nov. 8, 2008.

She had a love of horses, especially the Tennessee Walker Breed. Her favorite horse was named Pal. She also had a love for cats and dogs.

Fern was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and church guild.

Survivors include her four sons, Wayne Staab, Wendel Staab and his wife, Debra, Dean Staab and Dale Staab, all of Remsen; five grandsons, Donald and his wife Becky, Adam and Kim, Chris and Christine, Chad and Cheryl, Jesse and Jackie Staab; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Lorraine Miller and Helen Wiederholt, both of Remsen and Rita Mary Schaff and her husband, Edward, of Eugene, Ore.; and one brother-in-law, Roman Staab of Remsen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Lewine Loesche and her husband, Urban; one brother, Glenn Miller; one brother, Vitus Wiederholt; three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Schilmoeller and her husband, Emil, Doris Reilly and her husband Don, and Maxine Staab.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 2 p.m. on Thursday. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

Casket Bearers will be Donald, Adam, Chris, Chad and Jesse Staab and Larry Miller.
