Lucille E. Harkness, 86, of Le Mars, died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, at her home.

Lucille Esther Moffatt was born Nov. 16, 1924, near Westfield, the daughter of George Christy and Esther Ann (Boyd) Moffatt.

She attended rural school through the eighth grade and graduated salutatorian from Westfield High School in 1943. She later attended Westmar College in Le Mars.

Lucille worked at the T.S. Martin Department Store in Sioux City for a brief time.

After earning a teaching certificate from Westmar College, Lucille taught in the rural schools of Plymouth County for seven years.

On Dec. 10, 1954, Lucille and Everett Harkness were united in marriage at Akron. They made their home near Akron prior to moving to Le Mars.

Lucille worked at Aalfs Manufacturing in Sioux City and Le Mars. She was also employed with the Le Mars Community School District lunch program for 16 years.

Lucille was a member of the Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School, played the organ and piano and served as the church librarian.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Everett of Le Mars; a brother and his wife, Frank and Kay Moffatt of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Helen Moffatt of Akron; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Allen Moffatt and his wife Viola; and a brother, Harold Moffatt.

Funeral services were at10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The Rev. Casey Kleeman of the Le Mars Church of Christ officiated. Burial was at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the family present from 6-8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation continued at 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
