Shirley Nell Jones was born May 16, 1930. in Rose Hill, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Doris (Nanke) Jones. She attended primary school in Rose Hill and later graduated from Cleghorn High School in 1947.
Shirley continued her education at Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, Neb., where she earned a degree in education.
After college, Shirley taught school in Sioux Rapids.
On Dec. 22, 1951, Shirley and Dana Eugene Vannorsdel were united in marriage by Rev. Vernon Powell at the Church of the Brethren in Kingsley.
Dana enlisted in the United States Army while Shirley remained in Kingsley, staying with Vernon and Ruby Gross.
When Dana returned from the service the couple began farming in the Kingsley area.
Shirley took a teaching position at Pierson. She would teach numerous subjects there for the next 40 years. While teaching in Pierson she furthered her degree and earned a masters in education from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion.
Dana died Jan. 15, 2008.
Shirley was currently a resident at The Gardens in Cherokee.
Shirley was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Kingsley. She also belonged to the Garden Club and T.T.T.
Throughout the years Shirley and Dana hosted 13 foreign exchange students.
She enjoyed golfing, worldwide traveling with Dana and spent several winters in Arizona.
She will be lovingly remembered by her sisters, Lorraine Thomson and her husband, Jim of Cleghorn, and Lorene Mugge and her husband, Max of Cleghorn; nieces and nephews, Shelley and Tom Mortenson of Cherokee, Holly and Bob Morse of Meriden, Kristi and Craig Jensen of Cleghorn, Jim and Mary Thomson of Primghar, Curt and Deb Mugge of Gaithersburg, Md., Grant Mugge of St. Louis, Mo., Gwynne and Bill Lehr of Madison, Wis., Beth and Eckart Meiburg of Santa Barbara, Calif., Karen and Andy Grimmer of Madison, Wis., and Brian and Carol Mugge of Cleghorn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Dana.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today (Friday) at the Johnson - Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley. The Rev. Bob Blair officiated. Burial will take place at a later date. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Thursday at the Johnson - Earnest Funeral Home. The family was present to greet friends from 6-8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation continued at 9 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
