Imelda M. Roethler, 93, of Marcus, died Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus.

Imelda Mary Kass was born Feb. 25, 1918, on the family farm near Remsen, the daughter of Frank T. and Elizabeth (Nacke) Kass. She attended country school near her home. Following her education, Imelda assisted her family on the farm and performed housekeeping for neighboring families.

On June 15, 1938 Imelda and Raymond J. Roethler were united in marriage at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. The couple made their home at Mary Hill for a brief time before settling on a farm north of Marcus. Imelda and Ray farmed near Marcus for many years until retiring in 1968 when they moved into Marcus. Ray died Aug. 20, 1987. Imelda moved to the Heartland Care Center in Marcus in October 2010.

Imelda was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Ann's Guild and the Holy Name Missionary Society. She also participated in the Marcus Garden Club, Hobby Club, several card clubs and Farm Bureau.

Imelda was an avid flower and vegetable gardener and, while living in Marcus, worked part-time at the Marcus Greenhouse. She participated in the Baking Department at the Marcus Fair for 32 years and received numerous awards for her floral designs. She also enjoyed quilting and embroidery projects.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Shirley Dunne of Leesburg, Fla., and Marcus, Wayne Roethler and his wife, Doreen of Winfield, Ill. and Leesburg, Fla., Marvin Roethler of Lawton, Joan Tentinger and her husband, Bill of Le Mars, and Julie Hoeg and her husband, Randy of Wapello; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Mary Roethler of Marcus; a son-in-law, Bob Thompson of Sperry; a sister, Georgia Kass of Le Mars; brothers Joe Kass and his wife, Pat of Cherokee, Ray Kass and his wife, Floreine of Marcus, and Charles Kass of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray; a daughter, Eleanore Thompson; sons, Mark and Paul Roethler; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Roethler; a son-in-law, Joseph Dunne; sisters and their spouses, Dolores and Carl Letsche, Rita and Ralph Schuetz; brothers and their spouses, Greg and Shirley Kass, Leo and Gwen Kass; sisters-in-law, Donna Kass, Kathleen Kass, Hilda Kass.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 22, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. The Very Rev. Armand Bertrand will celebrate Mass. Inurnment will follow at Holy Name Catholic Cemetery in Marcus. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Earnest - Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus. A rosary will be led at 3 p.m. with a scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church on Friday prior to Mass.

Memorials may be directed to Holy Name Catholic Church, Heartland Care Center, Marcus Fair Association or Hospice of Siouxland.
