LE MARS -- Gehlen Catholic jumped on Remsen-Union starter Josh Bohnenkamp right away in Wednesday's 13-5 win in Le Mars.
"We were hitting the ball well and doing things better as a team," Gehlen coach Marty Kurth said. "This is the time of year you want to play your best baseball, so we are going to continue doing what we're doing and hope we can extend that into the tournament."
The Jays took advantage of 14 walks issued by three different Rocket pitchers as they scored 13 runs on 11 hits.
Blake Wiltgen paced the team with a 3-for-4 showing that included an RBI.
Mitch Christoffel went 2-for-5 with a two-RBI double and Devin Groenhagen drove in a run in his 2-for-3 plate performance.
Angel Chagolla went 2-for-3 and Derek Bretey was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Bohnenkamp lasted three innings for the Rockets. The senior allowed five runs - one earned - on one hit and seven walks. Bohnenkamp, who suffered the loss, fanned four.
Danny Smith shut the Jays down in 1 2/3 innings of relief, giving up two hits without allowing a run. Smith walked two and struck out two.
Nick Braun threw the final 1 1/3 innings for the Rockets. Braun allowed eight runs - seven earned - on seven hits and five walks. He struck out one.
Wiltgen earned the win on the hill for the Jays. The freshman southpaw allowed five earned runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out three.
Nick Braun went 2-for-4 with an RBI to pace the Rockets while Colby Felts went 2-for-3 with a double. Brian West drove in two runs for R-U (11-10).
Gehlen (13-12) plays at Hinton on Thursday in its regular season finale.
