Jays drop pair of duals

The Gehlen Catholic boys golf team dropped a pair of dual meets on Friday at Hartley.

South O'Brien picked up two wins with a team score of 172. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn shot a 174 and Gehlen was third with a 182.

"We had troubles with out-of-bounds and hazard penalty strokes again," Gehlen coach Kent Zevenbergen said. "If we leave those 10 penalty strokes and extra shots out there on the course, we are right in the mix with these teams. But with schools as adept as SOS and HMS, you can't make those mistakes and expect to win.

Dylan Kneip shot a 40, which earned him a gold medal against HMS and a silver against SOS.

Johnny Ruden shot a 46 while Derek Bretey and Ross Ruhland wrapped up counting scores as each carded a 48.

Austin Juhl and Chad Langel each shot 49 for Gehlen's non-counting scores.

The Jays return to action on Tuesday at the WEC meet in Primghar.
