Michael David Powell was born Aug. 25, 1954, in Primghar, the son of Michael T. and Beverly R. (Kimmel) Powell. Mitch, as he was known by his family and friends, graduated from East High School in Rusk, Texas in 1972. He later attended and graduated from Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City in 1976.
Mitch had lived and worked as a welder in Houston and Tyler, Texas, as well as in Washington. In the late 1990s, Mitch moved to Le Mars and later began working at the Can Farm in 1999, continuing there until December 2010.
Mitch was united in marriage to Robin Jammerthal June 18, 2007.
Mitch loved his family and friends. He was a very accomplished musician, having taught himself to play several instruments. Through the years, Mitch had played with several bands.
Survivors include his wife, Robin of Le Mars; his father, Michael Taylor Powell of Newport, Wash.; two sons, Josh Powell of Minneapolis, Minn.,and Micah Riffey of Sioux City; three step-sons, Nathan Hemmingsen of Sioux City, Nicholas Hemmingsen of Akron, and Austin Hemmingsen of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother, Greg (Joni) Powell of Blanchard, Idaho; two sisters, Kathleen (Teddy) Bearden of Berryville, Texas and Mary Jo Powell of Spokane, Wash.; two grandchildren, Lane and Pacey Riffey of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Beverly and Larry O'Neil.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the Rev. Jon Meredith of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitations will be from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday morning at the funeral home.
