Michael Henry Even was born July 20, 1929, in Alton, the son of Joseph T. "Matty" and Blanche (Sauer) Even. He was raised at Alton, where he graduated from St. Mary's Academy. From 1951 to 1953, he served in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Riley in Manhatten, Kan.
On May 12, 1952, he married Norma Jane Schnepf at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens. They made their home in Alton, where he was a partner in the Even Motor Company, a longtime Pontiac dealer, from 1948 to 1980.
Later, he served as the postmaster of the Alton Post Office, and he sold real estate.
"Mike" was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where he served as a lector and a Eucharistic minister, and he belonged to the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was active in the Floyd American Legion Post in Alton and the 40 & 8s. He held many positions in the Legion, locally, and in the county and state. He was a true patriot.
He enjoyed genealogy, golf, and family events.
Survivors include his wife of almost 59 years, Jane; five sons and their wives, Mick and Gayle Even, of Le Mars, Mark and Joyce Even, of Rochester, Minn., and Matt and Phyllis Even, of Algona; two daughters and their husbands, Mary and Mark Conway, of Cedar Falls and Melissa and Matt Elsbecker, of Fort Dodge; 18 grandchildren, Jake Even, and his special friend, Kathleen Neary; Gina Even, and her fiancÚ, Joe Sidari; Amanda, and her husband, Zach Delsman; Tyler Even, and his wife, Jenny; Dan Even; Nick Even, and his wife, Libby; Lisa Even; Allison, and her husband, Josh Saba; Katrina Even; Andy Conway, and his wife, Micale; Molly Conway; Katie Conway; Jack Conway; Zach Elsbecker; Chloe Elsbecker; Mackenzie Elsbecker; Eli Elsbecker; and Maggie Elsbecker; five great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Jim and Carol Even, of Port Clinton, Ohio and Jack and Janet Even, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Carol, and her husband, Jeff Halstrom, of Yuma, Ariz., and Mary Lois Even, of Sioux City; and three sisters-in-law, Lois Even, of Alton; Loretta Schnepf, of Le Mars; and Dolores Flaherty, of Houston, Texas.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jay Even and Tom Even, and his wife, Dorothy; and Jane's siblings and their spouses, Elmer and Esther Schnepf, Ralph Schnepf, Mac and Theresa Schnepf, Helen and Sylvester Pick, Harriet and Frank Ludwig, Marian and Bill Fitzpatrick, and T. W. Flaherty.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. The Rev. Paul Eisele will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today (Monday), with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
