Elsie Gertrude Beeck was born Oct. 7, 1915, on the family farm near Akron, the daughter of Christian and Meta (Mangelson) Beeck. She was baptized into the Christian faith at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township and later confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Merrill. She attended country school in Plymouth County and later high school at Liberty Consolidated, rural Plymouth County.
She was united in marriage to Alvin Frerichs on Dec. 9, 1936, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. She and Alvin farmed near Akron.
Elsie was a homemaker for her family. Later on, Elsie began working for Otis Radio in Hawarden. She worked there for more than 25 years. In 1975, the couple moved to Akron. Alvin died Oct. 29, 1982.
For the past 17 years, Elsie made her home at the Ridgewood Apartments in Akron.
Elsie was a lifelong member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township, rural Akron. She enjoyed being involved with the ladies quilting group for many years. Elsie also enjoyed doing needlework, crocheting, reading, and walking.
But most of all, she loved the times spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her four children: Elaine Dunbar (Bill) of Denver, Colo., Judy Bauerly (Rich) of Le Mars, Bob Frerichs (Iola) of Akron, and Karen Carner (Rick) of Pittsburgh, Pa.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister: Ella Frerichs of Akron; a brother-in-law: Arnie Frerichs (Edith) of Sioux City; two sisters-in-law: Halene Frerichs of Sioux City and Mary Turner of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin; three sisters: Ida Goergen, Rose Feauto, and Lillian Albert; and three brothers: Paul Beeck, Edward Beeck, and Chris Beeck.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township, rural Akron. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday with the family present after 5 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Visitation will resume 1 hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
Memorials may be made in Elsie's name to the Akron Care Center Building Fund in care of the Akron Care Center, 121 South Street, Akron, Iowa 51001.
