ORANGE CITY -- The Gehlen Catholic boys golf team braved the less-than-ideal conditions on Monday to fall 158-174 to Unity Christian in a War Eagle Conference golf match at Landsmeer Golf Course in Orange City.
Dustin Kneip finished third and led the Jays with a 40. Derek Bretey shot a 43 while Johnny Ruden added a 44. Dylan Kneip and Blake Wiltgen wrapped up counting scores as each shot a 47.
Ross Ruhland added a non-counting 55.
"We golfed pretty well for the cold, wet conditions," Gehlen coach Kent Zevenbergen said. "I knew Dustin was ready for varsity after scoring so well in JV meets, but he really put together a solid round for us shooting a 40 and medaling.
"Derek Bretey and Johnny also did well - I'm happy with their scores too," Zevenbergen continued. "Unity is the best school in our conference, and to be within 16 strokes of them is really good for us, so I'm happy with our effort tonight."
The Jays (2-1, 2-1) return to action on Tuesday at Akron-Westfield.
Nemmers earns first-place medal
The Lady Jays improved to 2-0 in WEC play and overall as they defeated Unity with a team score of 217.
The Knights do not feature enough players to register a team score.
Mollie Nemmers finished first with a 48 and Shannon Smith finished second with a 51.
Ali Galles finished third with a 54 and Lauren Sitzmann wrapped up counting scores with a 64.
