Rep. Huseman recovering after heart attack

What started as a trip home from Des Moines ended up in emergency double bypass surgery for Rep. Dan Huseman (R-Aurelia) earlier this month.

Huseman, who is now home recovering, says he is feeling well and is still on the job for his constituents in Iowa House District 53.

The state representative was driving back from the capital on April 8 and stopped in Iowa Falls to pick up his grandson for a weekend visit.

When he stopped at the house there, though, he wasn't feeling well and decided to get checked out at the hospital.

After some tests, Huseman was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Fort Dodge, which has a cardiac unit. The decision was made that he needed double bypass surgery.

"It was a heart attack," said Huseman, who had suffered another heart attack eight years ago.

He said he also suffered a minor stroke on April 8.

"I'm having a little trouble with a few fingers my left hand, but they're about 90 percent better than they were that day," he said.

The bypass surgery went well, and Huseman was released to come home last Wednesday.

"They were happy with the progress I'd made," he said. "We won't know how much damage was done until I go back in a couple of weeks and do some more sonograms."

Right now he's home in Aurelia working on recovery.

"The main thing is to get my strength back to where I can get back to as normal as I can," Huseman said.

He doesn't plan to return to the capital this week, and is unsure of whether or not he will the following week, which is supposed to be the last week of this year's legislative session.

Some of his colleagues have taken over the legislative bills Huseman was responsible for in Des Moines so they can move forward.

And Huseman said he still wants the people he represents to stay in touch with him.

"They can still email me or call me. Whatever problems they need to be taken care of, we'll find a way to get that done," he said. "I'm still their representative. If they need anything they can still get a hold of me, because that's very important to me."

He said he is feeling much better and is thankful for how the situation turned out.

"I was fortunate I was in the right place at the right time doing the right thing, and I know the Lord was with me," Huseman said. "I appreciate all the cards, letters, phone calls, flowers and support that people have given me. That all helps."

Huseman's email is and his home address is 6144 Y Ave., Aurelia, IA, 51005. His home telephone number is 712-434-5880.
