Christine Helen Meis, 88, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Christine was born July 1, 1922, at rural Le Mars, the daughter of Frank and Susan (Rodenbour) Plendl. She was raised and educated in the Le Mars area and received her education in the rural school system.
On Nov. 25, 1941, she married Arthur Meis at Oyens. The couple made their home near Oyens where they were engaged in farming. In 1957, she began working at the Kohout Cap Factory in their Le Mars location and then at their Orange City location. The couple also retired from farming in 1961 when they turned over the operation to their son, Marvin.
Christine was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Church Guild and Christian Mothers.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis and his wife, Janice, and Paul and his wife, Kathy, all of Le Mars; two daughters, Kathleen Schumann and her husband, Edward of Brainerd, Minn., and Diane Dunham of Marshalltown; 15 grandchildren; one step-granddaughter;17 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Rita Plendl of Minneapolis, Minn., and Shirley Plendl of Le Mars; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Art on Jan. 13, 2011, one son, Marvin; one grandson, Dean Meis; one son-in-law, Edward Dunham; three brothers, Roman Plendl and his wife, Isabele, Virgil and John Plendl; two sisters-in-law, Angeline Meis and Mathilda Meis; and one brother-in-law, Joseph and his wife, Elizabeth Meis.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery in Oyens. Visitation will be anytime after 2 p.m. today (Friday). There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Casketbearers will be Jon Dunham, Randy and Clint Schumann, Jared, Ryan and Jamie Meis.
