DeWayne Marlin Roetman, 75, of Pocahontas, formerly of Le Mars and Gowrie, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born July 18, 1935 in Colton, S.D., the son of John and Hennrietta (Visser) Roetman. He graduated from Le Mars High School in 1953. He married Darlene Richards June 6, 1954, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hinton.

The couple moved to Gowrie in 1955 where they made their home until moving to Pocahontas in 2008. While living in Gowrie, DeWayne was first employed by the Gowrie Municipal Utilities. He later began a career with Farmland Industries which spanned more than 20 years. He ended his tenure as operations supervisor.

DeWayne was a devoted husband and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, teaching them his passion of hunting and fishing. He was an avid outdoorsman that always returned more to nature than he took. He was an active member of Ducks Unlimited and a black powder enthusiast.

Darlene and DeWayne traveled following his retirement, attending their grandchildren's school and sports activities. In recent years, much of his time was spent at their wetland farm west of Pocahontas.

DeWayne is survived by his wife Darlene and their four children: Jeffrey (Marcia) Roetman of Iowa City, and their children: Tyler (Jenny), Tiffany, Brittany, Brooke Ann, Jordan, Brandon, Madison and Alex; Jennifer (Robert) Heuertz of Le Mars, and their children: Steven, Matthew, Emily, Rachel and Stephanie; Joel (Tammy) Roetman of Coon Rapids, and their children: Jacob, Joseph and Justin (Sara); and James (Julie) Roetman of Pocahontas, and their children: Nicole and Austin; and five great-grandchildren.

DeWayne was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Fiday at Hillside Cemetery at Merrill. Visitation will be today (Thursday) from 4-7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas.
