LCS, Gehlen bands place at Lewis & Clark Jazz Festival

Jazz bands from Le Mars Community and Gehlen Catholic Schools took honors in their classes at the Lewis & Clark Jazz Festival Monday in Sioux City.

Le Mars Community took first place in Class 3A and Gehlen Catholic took second place in Class 1A at the festival held at the Western Iowa Tech campus.

In addition, outstanding soloists awards went to Andre Kelly, Kim Orhlund and Kristen Ahlers at Le Mars Community and Derek Probst, Michaela Bretey and John Chung at Gehlen Catholic.

Directors Curt Orhlund and Paul Niebuhr said this was the best performance so far for their two jazz bands.

Both bands will compete March 17 at the University of South Dakota Jazz Festival.

Second place in Class 3A went to Spirit Lake with Spencer taking third place.

In Class 1A, Aurelia took first place honors, with third place going to Kingsley-Pierson and fourth place to Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn.
